Decision by the Inter-Ministerial Committee for four new waste management PPP projects in Attica

25.10.2012 - 16:03

The Inter-Ministerial Committee for PPPs approved the implementation of four (4) new waste management projects in Western Attica (Fili, Ano Liosia), Northeast and Southeast Attica.
The total annual amount of waste to be managed by all facilities has been estimated at 1.3 million tons, while the four tender procedures are to be launched within 2012 with the aim to close until the end of 2013.

The private partners selected will undertake the design, financing, construction, maintenance, facility management and operation of the waste treatment units. Total investments are estimated at 350 million euro, while the total value of contracts (facilities, operation, maintenance) is 1.2 billion euro. All projects will create more than 1000 jobs during operation and more than 1200 during construction.

These projects bring multiple benefits for the country, such as the implementation of investments and creation of new jobs, environment protection, waste for energy production, achieving the EU targets for recycling materials and reducing waste to landfill.

The tendering procedures allow all available technologies that meet the requirements of environmental targets, European and national legislation. Open technology enhances healthy competition among the contestants and the selection of the best solution in terms of local government and the citizens, with full transparency, ensuring the public interest. Main selection criterion of the contractor will be the lower fee to be paid by the citizens, while achieving all environmental objectives. It is foreseen that the projects will be co-financed by EU funds.

The Inter-ministerial Committee was chaired by Mr. Hatzidakis Minister for Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks. Participants were Mr. Stylianidis Minister of Interior, Mr. Kalafatis Alternate Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Mr. Mitarakis Deputy Minister for Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, Mr. Sgouros President of EDSNA and Head of the Region of Attica, as well as Mr. Mantzoufas Special Secretary for PPPs.
